The Lions Den Six Pack 3 project was a push forward with technology and sound. My goal with every project is to do something new, push the limits and to ultimately one up my last project.
I produced the beat for ‘Give It Up’ as well as tracked vocals, mixed and mastered it. I was able to take this track from scratch to finish with vocals from singer/songwriter Tara Alesia and rap artist Don Prahfit.
What makes this track special to me is that it’s the product of the learning process that took place to produce the Lions Den Six Pack 3. Prior to starting the Lions Den Six Pack 3 I used Pro Tools as my recording software of choice. I took the opportunity to learn how to produce in Ableton which is a competitor software to Pro Tools. The main reason for the switch was the fact that it’s quickly becoming an industry standard and most of my peers use it. I also like the challenge of learning something new that looks intimidating at first glance.
The first step was to gather tutorials so that I can get a full understanding of what the software can do. I’m kind of a technology geek so what I thought would be a couple hours of learning turned out to be around 20+ hours. Going through this learning process made me really amped to try the beat production abilities of Ableton. I haven’t produced a beat in years so I thought I’d give it a shot so that I can put to use what I just learned. The first beat I made is what you hear on the track ‘Give It Up’. I sent the track to our SMG team and by our next recording session Tara Alesia had vocals ready to record which lead to a call for Don Prahfit to come in and lace the track with a verse.
The rest of the process was to mix and master the track. The end result was a fully produced song in Ableton with the help of some vintage modeled plugins. All original, all organic, created by the SMG camp for the world to listen to and enjoy!
